Lovebug season: how to remove them without hurting your paint

By ZR Mobile Detailing · Kissimmee, FL · 4 min read

Every May and September, Central Florida drivers know the routine: a drive down I-4 or the Turnpike and the front of the car is covered. Lovebugs aren't just ugly. Their remains are acidic, and baked in the Florida sun they can etch permanent marks into your clear coat within days.

How to remove lovebugs safely

  1. Act fast. Fresh bugs come off easily. After 2–3 days in the sun they start to etch.
  2. Soak, don't scrub. Lay a microfiber towel soaked in warm water (or a dedicated bug remover) over the area for 3–5 minutes to soften them.
  3. Wipe gently with a clean, damp microfiber. Flip it often so you don't drag grit across the paint.
  4. Wash the area with car shampoo, rinse, and dry.
  5. Protect it. A coat of spray sealant makes the next batch much easier to remove.

Never use these

Prevention is easier

A slick, protected surface is your best defense. Cars with a fresh sealant or a ceramic coating let bugs wipe right off. During peak season, a quick rinse every few days goes a long way.

Already etched? Light etching can usually be polished out. Deeper marks need paint correction. Text us a photo at (951) 907-0723 and we'll tell you what it'll take.
